Heavy rains set off flood in Goalpara

GOALPARA, September 30:  Heavy rainfall since the last 24 hours has inundated at least 30 villages and created flood overnight in Goalpara.
Two revenue circles, Matia and Balija, have been badly affected in the downpour and people were evacuated from several areas. The situation is critical in areas like Krishi and its adjacent Balbala. Several places of NH-51 are under water. The State Disaster Response Force or SDRF has been placed in both the revenue circles.
According to official information, about 110 people, 70 from Matia and 40 from Balija have been shifted to safer places. Two relief camps, one at Nodirko LP School under Balija and Khurd Manikpur LP School under Matia, were opened on Saturday.
About 19,500 people have been affected in this flood, which include 12,000 from Matia and 7,500 from Balija. On the other hand, the incessant rain created water-logging problem in many areas in the town like yapara, Bhatipara, Tilapara, Dostigar and Kismatpur.
