FROM OUR STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Aug 19: Heavy torrential rains during the past two days threw normal life throughout the State out of gear, besides causing mudslides in many areas. A nine year old girl was washed away by the powerful current of river Ganol at a place in the outskirts of Tura town.

It has been learnt that all ten districts of the State have reported about mudslides and other disruptions caused by the heavy incessant rains.

Mudslides were reported from Tongseng in East Jaintia Hills, Umthied in West Khasi Hills and certain pockets of South West Khasi Hills. Landslides were reported from Iawmusiang in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills in which a house was also damaged.

Overall, there was nothing untoward incident caused by the torrential rains except for the washing away of the minor girl. Efforts are on to trace the body, stated the Deputy Commissioner West Garo Hills Pravin bakshi.

The District Disaster Magement Authorities (DDMAs) are on extra alert in view of the warning issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
