SHILLONG, April 5: The heritage Shillong golf club was saved from the flames that gutted its adjacent stock yard on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. While the timely arrival of the fire tenders prevented the fire to spread to the architectural Assam type building, yet enough of devastation has been caused by the fire.

Magement of the Shillong Golf Club told this correspondent that the approximate loss is around Rupees One crore fifty lakhs and these include the antique coring cutter and the newly procured expensive equipments meant  to improve the quality of golf sports in the sprawling Shillong golf links green.

This correspondent had a spot visit and noticed that the entire equipments placed in the stockyard have been reduced to ashes.  One of the members of the magement Shyam Singkhania said, “Based on the initial inputs provided by the sleeping employees who noticed the fire, the flames seems to have spread from behind”. The word ‘behind’ indicated to the location of the stockyard which is just adjacent to the nearby road.  There are ventilation holes that can easily make any miscreants use any inflaming agent to create the fire.

Prelimiry investigation carried out by the police does not rule out the cause of the fire due to foul play. “At this moment, we are suspecting foul play and the question of short circuit does not arise”, stated the investigating officer while sharing his prelimiry findings, even as he added that the investigation is on.

An F.I.R was lodged at Polo police Station and an inventory that consisted of 25 odd destroyed equipments was submitted. The Police have sealed the site of the occurrence for further investigation.

However, the damage to the equipments has come as a body blow to Shillong Golf Club, a club that has endeavored to provide all the logistics that can transform the 18 hole Shillong golf course into an intertiol golfing destition.
