High voltage AGM at Barsapara today

GUWAHATI, June 11: A wind of change is blowing in the Assam Cricket Association. An altogether new set of functiories is set to take over the cricketing body which had been dogged by controversies and irregularities over the last several years.

The much awaited annual general meeting of the association, due since last two years, will be held tomorrow, following directions from the Gsauhati High Court which is currently hearing a case over the alleged anomalies in the association. The meeting will start 10AM at the Barsapara Cricket stadium.  

The Gauhati High Court last month instructed the Assam Cricket Association to hold its Annual General Meeting and form a new committee. The court also appointed Justice (Retired) CR Sarma as observer for the meeting.

Elaborate security arrangements will be made for tomorrow’s meeting at the Barsapara cricket stadium and only valid identity card holders will be allowed to attend it. There may be even restriction for the common people to enter the Barsapara cricket stadium campus till the meeting is over. On the other hand entire proceeding of the meeting will be video recorded.

There will be several agenda in the meeting but the most important one will be selection of a new set of office bearers. Altogether 33 office bearers will be selected for the next term which include president, Vice presidents (6+1), secretary, joint secretaries (3), Assistant secretaries (4), treasurer, secretary (umpire board), and governing body members (13). Apart from that there will be two nomited members of president in the governing body.

It is now almost fil that cabinet Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the new president of the Assam Cricket Association. However, heavy lobbying is going on till this night for the other posts. Although a section of the association is in favour to constitute the committee avoiding election but many candidates have taken contradictory stands and are trying to garner necessary support from the members.

A source from the Assam Cricket Association today said, “We are still trying to avoid election. But if it is required we are ready for it. All arrangements are up to the mark.”

As per the information collected from the different sources the candidates for the secretary posts now reduced to two- Brojen Gohain and  Pradip Buragohain. For the vice president posts the mes  around the corner are Ramen Dutta, Parikshit Dutta, Babul Hore, Jayanta Malla Barua, Rihan Daimary, Rakibul Hussain,Debojit Saikia and Niloy Dutta. The sources added that unless there is any last minute twist then Rakibul Hussain may lose his place as a vice president. Meanwhile for the joint secretaries post Ajoy Sarma, Satan Das and Sanjiv Handiq are the front runner. However the picture is not still clear for the four posts of assistant secretaries as several mes are in the air.

Like the secretary, the contest in the treasurer post also reduced to two candidates-Abdul khaleq and Manindra th Saikia. If khaleq contests for the post of treasurer than there will be a new face in the umpire secretary post and Parimal Sinha is considering as the front runner for it.
