Hima, Riyan receive UBC awards from CM

GUWAHATI, July 1: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal handed over the UBC Assam best player award 2017 to new sensation of Indian athletics Hima Das in a glittering function held here today. Promising cricketer Riyan Parag, who represented India in the U-19 World Cup, collected the most promising player award.

Apart from certificate and memento Hima today received cash award of Rs one lakh from Chief Minister while Riyan was richer by Rs 50,000.

Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that state Government has taken a series of steps to improve the standard of sports in state. “We have already decided to start a Sports University in Assam. Government is also working to promote the game at the grass root level taking the help of sports science and sports medicine. For taking sports a step forward we now need support from parents of players and sports organizers.”

Several sports persons, who performed well in the different international level competitions during the last one year, were also felicitated in the same function. The players who were felicitated today were: Kristi Boro (Tennis), Pranjal Bhumij (Football), Ashmita Chaliha (Badminton), Lovlina Borgohain (Boxing), Hriday Hazarika (Shooting), Ankushita Boro (Boxing), Trisha Gogoi (Table Tennis), Anu Chutia (Cycling), Biswajit Roy (Para Taekwondo), Annaytam Rajkumar (Para Olympic, Swimming) and Rodali Barua (Taekwondo). Three sports organizers-Dilip Pathak, Bhaba Kalita and Sukumar Medhi were also felicitated in the function. It may be mentioned here that Ashmita and Rodali already qualified for the Indian team in the forthcoming Asian Games along with Hima Das.
