Himanta slams Congress for 'failing' to develop Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao

From a Correspondent

Bokajan, April 2: In his series of marathon rallies across the State, the once Congress strong man and now BJP’s chief election strategist Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma landed in Hanjanglangso Sports Complex playground to campaign for the party’s candidate Dr Numal Momin from 17-Bokajan LAC.

Addressing the large gathering, the leader appealed to people to root out Congress in order to ensure development.

Launching a scathing attack on the Congress, the BJP heavy weight said, “Congress has failed to bring about development in the hill district of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in its 15-year regime. Prior to my resigtion from the ruling party, we started work on the proposed medical college at Diphu. However, the Gogoi government has failed to complete the project and if BJP happens to form government, we will make the medical college a reality in just one year,” he said.

Sure of forming government, Sarma said, “It has been my long-pending wish to establish a 300-bedded hospital in Bokajan. Our party candidate Dr Momin is himself a doctor and it is my belief that we will start work on the 300-bedded hospital before the KAAC MAC election in 2017.”

Terming the family-centric politics of Congress as a television serial, the BJP bigwig called it ‘ghar sansar’ by referring to Sonia Gandhi-Rahul Gandhi, Tarun Gogoi-Gaurav Gogoi, Bharat rah-Rani rah, Anjan Dutta-Ankita Dutta, Ripun Bora-Monica Bora, Biren Sing Ingti-Klengdun Ingti among others.

Taking a step further, Sarma urged people to stand united against Congress to usher in development of the hill district. “There is not even a single institution in the hills district where the young aspirants can opt for higher education. The BJP government at the Centre is planning to set up a Hills University conjoining the hill district of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao,” he added.

Taking a jibe at the claims of the Congress government of providing concrete houses to poor people under IAY scheme, the BJP leader said, “The houses built are incomplete and many are yet to be benefitted under the scheme. The BJP government at the Centre has taken the resolution to transform all mud houses of the poor people into concrete by 2021.”

Further assailing Congress, Sarma said that the Union Government was providing rice to all poor through PDS at a subsidized rate of Rs 3/kg. But the State Government had failed to even bear the transportation charges which was indirectly levied upon the beneficiaries and if BJP takes charge in Dispur, rice and other essential commodities would be delivered at the doorsteps of the beneficiaries at more subsidized rates.

The BJP leader was also quick at referring to the Gujarat model to woo voters by promising to provide free Scooty to meritorious girls if it came to power in Dispur. He also assured free education to poor boys and girls at colleges and universities.

On being prodded about the ongoing tension along the Assam-galand border over illegal encroachment, Sarma straightway replied that not even a single inch of Assam land would fall into the hands of illegal encroaches.
