From a Reporter

SHILLONG, Nov 30: A documentary film titled Because we did not choose will be screened at Khasi tiol Dorbar hall, Mawkhar on  December 8. The free screening will be from 5 pm.

The film documents the journey and participation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo people of the State to the theatres of war in Mesopotamia and France 100 years ago during the First World War.

Speaking to reporters, film’s director Wanphrang K Diengdoh said a memorandum will also be submitted to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma urging him to include history of the 26th Khasi Labour Corp in school and university curriculum of the State.

“This is a significant part of our history and community as it marks the largest movement of people from our State at any given point time. Hence it needs to be included in the curriculum,” he said.

He said it took four years for him to complete the film as research was done not only in the country but outside as well.

“We have screened this film across India and abroad, including London, Wales, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad and now in Shillong. On December 16, we will screen the film at Jowai,” he said.

When asked about the expenditure in making the film, Diengdoh said, “I have not done any calculation on the exact expenditure, but it will roughly come to around Rs.16-17 lakh.”
