Holi celebrated with traditiol gaiety in Shillong

From a Reporter

SHILLONG, March 2: Holi, which marks the advent of spring, was celebrated amidst fun and gaiety today by a large section of the people in Shillong.

Also known by the me of ‘Basanta Utsav’, the ‘festival of colour’ and the ‘festival of love’, was celebrated with the spraying of coloured powder and distribution of sweets in various localities of the city.

On this day, people visit their near and dear ones and spray holi colour on each other. Children as well as elderly people were seen to be celebrating the festival with colours of different hues.

Though in Northern India balloons filled with coloured solutions are used to target groups in localities, these trends are not seen in this part of the country.

Some groups were seen colouring others with coloured powder mixed in oil. It was also seen that people run away from those who spray colour mixed with oil as it becomes extremely difficult to remove the same. Another unseen trend here is the use of eggs during holi. Eggs are broken on opponents head with coloured powder in order to give a sticky look.

Singing, dancing and music which are a part and parcel of the festival of colour are not much of a trend here.
