Hospital on farmland opposed

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

BARPETA, April 2: The people of Chenga in Barpeta district staged a demonstration on Wednesday in protest against the government’s decision to construct a model hospital on a farmland and demanded that the hospital be built on a plot near the Sankardev Bhari Dhua Ghat instead, or in the existing block PHC.

Hundreds of people of the locality gathered in the circle office campus in Chenga and demanded that the government move to construct the hospital on farmland be revoked. They submitted a memorandum to the circle officer in this regard.

Signed by Anjan Roy, secretary of the Chenga Oikya Sanmilan spearheading the movement against the government decision, the memorandum stated that although several organisations have been demanding that the hospital be built in any of these two sites, the government has not paid any heed to it. They also alleged that all the documents submitted to the office to this effect so far have been lost.

Referring to a resolution adopted in February 2014 during a meeting of the District Land Advisory Committee, in which a plot of land had been allotted to the Chenga Agriculture Farm in Maneri village, the memorandum said that this proposal should be adhered to in letter and spirit, while the proposed hospital should be constructed either near the Sankardev Bhari Dhua Ghat or in the existing Public Health Centre itself.
