HSPDP exudes confidence in regiol alliance

SHILLONG, April 24:  The opposition Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Monday exuded confidence that a regiol alliance will form the next government in Meghalaya.

“The regiol parties will be forming the government in the state sans the Congress and the BJP,” Basaiawmoit said at a party’s rally in his constituency.

According to the HSPDP chief, it was always his desire to have a regiol party ruling the state.

Basaiawmoit was of the opinion that only a regiol party will know about the way of life and aspirations of the indigenous people of the state.

“The Congress party has ruled for a good period of 45 years in the state but it still does not know about the way of life of the indigenous people of the state,” the HSPDP president said.

Basaiawmoit said that the central government always has the tendency to impose its authority on the state by bringing in laws that are in contrary to the aspirations of the indigenous people.

Coming to the issue of unity among regiol parties in Meghalaya, Basaiawmoit said that the HSPDP had offered an olive branch to other parties by offering not to set up candidates in constituencies where another regiol party has a brighter chance of winning.

“We hope that others too will reciprocate our offer,” the HSPDP chief said.

Meanwhile, the HSPDP stated that it is opposed to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Basaiawmoit feared that if the proposed bill becomes an act it will be easier for a Bangladeshi to cross over to the state and settle in these hills.

“Such people will claim that they are facing atrocities in their home country and enter India and settle in the state,” the HSPDP president said. It may be mentioned that India shares a 443 km long boundary with Bangladesh.
