PG COURSE DERECOGNITION IN NEIGRIHMS

SHILLONG, Nov 10: The oldest regiol party in Meghalaya, Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) on Friday petitioned the Centre over the de-recognition of the post graduate courses in the region’s super specialty hospital, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regiol Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).

In a petition to Union Health Minister JP dda, HSPDP legislator and president of the party, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said that the institute was conceptualized and built up as post-graduate/super specialty institute to generate man power and to meet healthcare requirements for the people of the Northeast.

Basaiawmoit pointed out that the post graduate courses in the institute were started around five years ago with the support of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the state government.

The HSPDP president informed that as per reports that during inspection by the Medical Council of India, several departments have been recommended for de-recognition.

These departments include anesthesia, radiology, general, surgery and medicine.

“Upon inquiry, we have come to know that the institute has increased a number of post graduate seats in certain disciplines like anesthesia without the permission of the ministry of health and family welfare,” Basaiamoit said.

The HSPDP president also pointed out that NEIGRIHMS has not tried to fulfill the deficiencies pointed out by an expert committee for running the post-graduate courses.

The HSPDP also informed the Union minister that the present NEIGRIHMS Director, DM Thappa has refused to acknowledge the deficiencies.

“He had sent the compliance report to the MCI with some alterations in the appointments of faculty at the institute’s clinical load and consequently, has put the institute at loggerheads with the MCI,” Basaiawmoit said.

Basaiawmoit also expressed disappointment over the apathy of the institute in correcting these deficiencies and taking a definite course of action to comply with the minimum requirements of MCI.

The HSPDP also urged dda to examine the issue and redeem the institute and restore its prestige even as it stated that the de-recognition of post-graduate course in the premier institute of the northeast is a matter of serious concern for students and their parents.
