HSPDP's loss is NPP's gain

From a Reporter

SHILLONG, Nov 17: In what can be termed as a setback for the Hills State Peoples’ Democratic Party (HSPDP), two of its leaders tendered their resigtion from the party on Friday.

The two leaders of HSPDP are its general secretary Golden Katrai and organising secretary Phailang Nongkynrih. Soon after their resigtion from the HSPDP, the duo joined the tiol People’s Party (NPP).

Later speaking to reporters here, Katrai said the main reason for his resigtion from the HSPDP party was the alliance forged by the party with the United Democratic Party (UDP).

“The alliance of these two parties had prompted me to resign from the party and I have nothing against the party leadership,” he clarified. Echoing similar views, Nongkynrih said, “If we look closely, the alliance will have more advantage for the UDP than the HSPDP.”

He said if the HSPDP had opted to go it alone in the Assembly elections scheduled next year then the party would have been in an advantageous position. “Because of the alliance, in some constituencies there will be friendly fight where candidates from both the parties will contest. However, both these parties should have decided to field only one candidate in a few constituencies and there should not be any friendly contest among the party’s candidates,” he said.
