From A Reoporter

SHILLONG, March 8: The Hynniewtrep Student Union (HSU), central body, on Wednesday has threatened to file a Public-Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) for allegedly issuing No Objection Certificate (NOC) to nine cement factories, during the tenure of three former CEMs of the Council.

As revealed in an RTI, the Union has expressed its opposition on the improper style of functioning of the JHADC by issuing NOC to nine cement factories in East Jaintia Hills which included Green Valley Cement and Star Cement which was issued during the tenure of (L) Qually Suiam as CEM, JUD Cement, Topcem Cement, Hills Cement issued by Moonlight Pariat, Cosmos Cement, Amrit Cement, Goldstone Cement and Adhunik Cement issued by Hambertus Nongtdu.

The Union informed that in the RTI filed by them, they had also inquired whether there was any agreement signed between the JHADC and the nine cement factories, however the reply in the RTI was in the negative.

Addressing reporters here, HSU president Kyrshan Rymbai said, “We have also witnessed that the cement factories are not following the rules and guidelines imposed by the JHADC, hence the environment in the region right from rivers, streams, forest areas etc., are getting polluted.”
