Human Chain By Nagaon Paper Mill Staff Protesting Prime Minister's Visit

JAGIROAD: The Kagaj Nigam Karmi Union (KNKU) of Nagaon Paper Mill (NPM) under Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) resorted to forming a human chain in front of the paper mill SBI on the National Highway-37 on Tuesday.

The programme was organized as a mark of protest against the Central and the State Government not taking any concrete step for the revival of the two paper mills in the State.

Talking to The Sentinel, KNKU president and secretary Dhiren Chandra Bora and Ananda Bordoloi respectively, said that the human chain was organized because Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Assam to inaugurate the Bogibeel bridge. They alleged that despite repeated assurances from the Prime Minister and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the two mills have not been revived as yet.

The KNKU demanded revival of the two paper mills and payment of their dues. The employees of the paper mill took out a candlelight rally on Monday as a mark of tributes to the mill’s employees who passed away without getting their salaries.

According to union, so far 47 employees of the two mills died of financial hardship following non-receipt of their salaries.

According to sources, up to his neck in debt, an employee of the mill named Katsing Bordoloi made an attempt to commit suicide on Monday. He was, however, rescued.
