Hundreds take part in protest rally against gang rape and murder

MARGHERITA, September 9: Activists of All Assam Maan Tai Speaking Students’ Union, All Assam Tribal Sangha, Mishing Mimak Kebang, TMPK, Tai Phake Jatiyo Parishad, Sema ga Jatiyo Parishad, Singpho Jatiyo Parishad, Tangsa ga Jatiyo Parishad, All Singpho Students’ Union, All Rabha Students’ Union and many other organizations of Margherita Subdivision took out a protest rally on Wednesday which started from Margherita India Club to Margherita Sub Divisiol Office (C) Gate. The protest rally was against the brutal gang rape and murder of a B Com first semester student of Margherita College on August 29 at Kamba Gaon under Ledo Police Outpost.

More than 500 activists took part in the protest rally. The agitators shouted various slogans like ‘We want justice’, ‘Hang the culprits’, ‘Make fast track court’, and ‘Assam Government Murdabad’. Pallav Shyam Wailung, president of All Assam Maan Tai Speaking Students’ Union and Jitesh Bora, joint secretary of All Assam Tribal Sangha Central Committee said that they had eight demands which should be fulfilled soon.

They demanded that the three accused in the gang rape and murder should be hanged to death, Rs 50 lakh compensation should be given to the family of the victim, suspected Bangladeshi immigrants in Margherita subdivision should be deported soon, Margherita Administration should conduct an inquiry on the contractors who bring suspected Bangladeshi tiols to work in the brick kilns and coal depots in Margheriat subdivision, among other demands.

A memorandum was submitted to Dibrugarh MP Rameswer Teli, Union Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, MLA Pradyut Bordoloi, Tinsukia District Deputy Commissioner and Tinsukia District Superintendent of Police through the Margherita Subdivisiol Officer (Civil).
