SHILLONG, May 4: The National People’s Party (NPP) which won a good number of seats in the Assembly elections this year, is preparing to field a strong candidate in the by-elections at Ampati scheduled to be held on May 28.

“There are already four or five aspirants which are vying for an NPP ticket to contest the upcoming polls and in the coming days the candidates will be applying for a party ticket,” former MLA and NPP leader Nihim D Shira told The Sentinel.

He informed that the party is, however, yet to take any decision on the name of the candidate to contest the election from Ampati but will first have to examine the winning capacity of the candidates applying for the ticket before making a final decision.

When asked, on the rumours which have been spreading that he will contest from Ampati, Shira said, “This is a false rumour because only recently I was appointed as the NPP national observer for the Ampati election.”

He further said that there is not the slightest of chances for him to contest the by-elections from Ampati constituency.
