Meghalaya-Assam border dispute

A REPORTER

SHILLONG, Nov 26: The HYC Raid Nongtung has condemned the alleged infringement by the Assam government on November 2015 for forcefully stopping the construction work of a building at Madan Umwang, Raid Nongtung under Block-2 in Ri Bhoi district. The building was meant for rearing Eri worms under the Sericulture department of the Meghalaya government.

“We condemn the actions of the Assam government on 24th November for preventing the construction work on the building to continue even after the Police outpost Mawsi had infected the construction site with is being sanctioned by the Meghalaya government,” H. Suting, president, HYC, Raid Nongtung Circle, told newsmen here on Thursday.

He alleged that around nine trucks including police personnel descended at the construction site and started dismantling and loading all the construction materials from the site onto the trucks and carried them back with them to Assam.

“The Chief Minister Mukul Sangma was quick to visit the site where the migratory birds are located in the area but when it comes to protecting and safeguarding the people of the area who are being suppressed by the Assam government he is turning a blind eye,” he said.

He said the people of Raid Nongtung are surprised to see that the Assam government had dismantled most of the construction works despite the fact that the area is under dispute with the Meghalaya government.

He said the Assam police are also searching for B. Mukhim, headman of Madanumwang, who is also a member of the Khasi Students Union. Expressing concern over the lack of commitment of the Meghalaya government to resolve the border dispute with Assam, he said, “It has been 45 years since the State has achieved statehood. However, till date the government has not been able to resolve the border dispute between the two states and this has created a lot of problems for the people residing in disputed areas and we condemn this ibility of the government.”
