SHILLONG, April 21: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday called upon the Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh not to implement the building bye-laws of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in Nongstoin area.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh, president of HYC, Nongstoin circle said, “The Minister has informed us that the State government has no such plans at present to implement the building bye-laws in the Nongstoin area.”

He said the minister has also assured that if there is any move from the State government to implement the building bye-laws in Nongstoin then the views and opinions of the public will be taken into consideration.

“We planned to protest programmes but after getting the assurance from the minister we have decided to call off all the agitation,” he said.

He informed that on April 12, the council had convened a public meeting in which it was decided to strongly oppose the move of the state government to implement the MUDA building bye-laws in the region.

According to general secretary of HYC, Robertjune Kharjahrin, the MUDA bye-law cannot be put to practice at Nongstoin because it does not fall under the Master Plan Area, it falls under the Town Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. “The state government should leave it to the Town Committee of the KHADC since this is the subject matter of the District Council,” he said.
