HYNF cries for SSLC exam centres in far-flung areas

From a correspondent

SHILLONG, Jan 17: The Hynniewtrep tiol Youth Front (HNYF) of northern region has demanded centres for Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examitions for the students of far-flung Umsiang, Umtrai, Korhadem, Sonidan, Umsohlait etc., areas under Mawhati in Ri-Bhoi district. The SSLC examition is slated to be held in March.

Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, HNYF president of northern region Marcus Marten said that five villages were deprived of examition centres and students appearing for the examitions would have to travel a distance of 70 km everyday to reach their examition centre.

“These students have to travel a distance of 70 km on an average everyday to take their examitions at centres located either at Nongpoh, Umsning, Byrnihat or Bhoirymbong,” Marten said.

The HNYF suggested a police station at Umsohlait and a police outpost at Umsiang as provisiol measures for the setting up an SSLC examition centre at Umsohlait. The HNYF also said that around 200 students would appear in the SSLC examition this year.

Meanwhile, in a memorandum submitted to the Controller of Examition, Meghalaya Board of School Education, the HNYF slammed the State Government for neglecting the education sector. “We feel this is sheer negligence on the part of the government in the education sector as well as harassment and deprivation of the local poor who cannot afford to travel such a distance to appear for their exams or rent a room far from their family in those areas where centres are available,” the HNYF stated.
