I will work for development, peace and prosperity: Kamali Basumatari

TANGLA, May 22: The 64 No. Panery LAC in Udalguri district was captured for the fourth consecutive term by 58-year old BPF MLA Kamali Basumatari.

By securing a record number of 38,627 votes, she defeated UPP candidate nda Ram Boro by a margin of 15,798 votes. The constituency, which saw democratic election since 1951, was taken hold of in the 2001 assembly polls by Kamali Basumatari as an Independent candidate by securing 37,956 votes against Congress legislator Mridula Saharia. Similarly in 2006, as an Independent candidate she again defeated Congress candidate Tulsi Kujur by securing 26,398 votes.

Significantly, in 2011 she defeated the then Congress candidate and present Rajya Sabha member Santius Kujur by securing 38,202 votes. In the 2016 assembly polls, former AGP minister and Congress candidate Durga Das Boro was nowhere in contest and secured third position.

After the results were out, Kamali Basumatari said, “In these years of my political career I had many sweet and bitter experiences. The region is lying backward since Independence

and developing the region is my priority in the five-year term. I will work for development and ensure that peace, prosperity and brotherhood prevails in the constituency.”
