Illegal Business of Controlled Drugs, Guwahati Serves As Epicentre!

GUWAHATI: Guwahati is the epicentre of the illegal business of controlled drugs in Assam and Nagaland! Controlled drugs are sent illegally to elsewhere in the State and Nagaland from this city.

Such a reality got unfolded on Monday when CID ADGP LR Bishnoi was addressing the press with Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC) IGP Anurag Tankha sitting beside him.

Bishnoi said that acting on a tip-off, on May 18 sleuths of the CID and the V&AC conducted a joint raid and seized a huge quantity of drugs from a godown of drug distributor Taheruddin Mazumdar at Dobaka. Taheruddin is the proprietor of M/s Mazumdar Drugs Distributor at Dobaka in Hojai district. “When our sleuths asked Taheruddin to lead them to the medicine store, he simply fainted and fell on the ground. He was immediately shifted to Dobaka PHC for treatment. His medicine store was then raided in the presence of his elder brother Nizamuddin Mazumdar and other witnesses. The raid yielded 4,700 bottles of cough syrup and 2.60 lakh different tablets,” he said, and added: “In accordance with the law, such drugs should have store- registers, supply-order slips, sale vouchers, purchase papers, etc. However, no such papers were found in the store.”

Bishnoi said that the CID suspects that Taheruddin supplies such controlled drugs to Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao and Nagaland illegally. “After the arrest of Taheruddin, it has come to light that he has connections with four drug stockists in Guwahati. Even as raids have been conducted, no arrests could be made as all the four stockists kept their shutters down for three days,” Bishnoi said.

The drugs seized during the raid are – 400 bottles of Bestorax codeine-based cough syrup, 400 bottles of Rexomac codeine-based cough syrup, 400 bottles of CONCOR codeine-based cough syrup, 200 bottles of Rodcuf codeine-based cough syrup, 2,500 bottles of Wirof codeine-based cough syrup and 800 bottles of Codextim codeine-based cough syrup. The market value of the seized cough syrup is Rs 5.64 lakh. The other seizures include 2.41 lakh Sampax tablets with a market value of Rs 12.42 lakh; 7200 Winspasmo tablets worth Rs 36,936 and 18,700 Nitrozepam tablets worth Rs 95,931.
