Illegal drug sale

From A Reporter

SHILLONG, July 18: The illegal sale of drugs by peddlers in the capital city continues to thrive even at a time when Meghalaya police have heighten efforts to curb the mece which has greatly affected the society and especially the local youths of the state.

In a crackdown by police on Tuesday afternoon at around 1.10PM two person accused in selling drugs in the city was arrested from their residents at Nongrim Maw by a police team from Laitumkhrah led by (SI) P.C Sangma.

The police seized 0.69 grams of heroin form their possession along with one mobile phone.

When contacted, SP East Khasi Hills Davis N Marak on the incessant drugs trade and usage in the city, said, “This mece can only be curb when the society cease to look at drug use as a crime but take it as a social problem.”

Admitting that to eradicate the mece of drugs completely is impossible, he however said, “We will not be able to stop it completely no matter how much we try but we can bring it down to an acceptable level in the society so that it does not become a problem.”

The SP is of the opinion that to keep the mece of drug use and illegal sale in control there is a need to strengthen the Anti-rcotics Task Force (ANTF) and to create more awareness programmes in various localities in the state including school and colleges.

He further said that this (Drugs) is a social problem and must be treated first from home as when drug users don’t get money they would start stealing money from home and later indulge in other crimes.

When asked, Marak said, “These drug peddlers are drug addicts themselves and are being used by the drug mafia’s to supply and peddle the drugs in the city.”
