SHILLONG, April 27: Illegal dumping of large quantity of outdated medicines and empty PDS sugar plastic bags and packets were found in a place along the road to the Shillong peak. The members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council, Upper Shillong Circle, on Monday morning lodged an FIR at Laban police station for necessary legal action against those involved. Hynniewtrep Youth Council, Upper Shillong, general secretary F. Mawlong said such acts were irresponsible. He also informed that when the members reached the place, they found that empty 50 kg sugar bags and 1 kg packets of the Food & Supply department of Government of Meghalaya were dumped at Sanmein, a place just before reaching the    Shillong Peak. Mawlong said, “We strongly suspect that these empty plastic bags and packets were being dumped by the dealer, who is responsible for distributing the sugar quota under PDS so that they can sell it in the black market,” Mawlong said.

Huge quantity of expired tablets and liquid medicines were also dumped there besides some documents.

“On checking the documents, it was found they belong to Shivalik Pharma and Surgical located near MTC building in Police Bazaar and some bore addressed of the military hospital in the city,” Mawlong said.

“This haphazard way of dumping medicines will affect the health of the people especially when monsoon season has started,” he said.

Mawlong further urged the authority concerned to take up the matter seriously by conducting a thorough inquiry and ensure those responsible are booked.
