IMD forecasts heavy to heavy rain for Arunachal Pradesh with over 800 people stranded

Itanagar: With the intensity of monsoon increasing in the northeastern states, the states are suffering from a situation of extremely heavy rains. The rainfall has been particularly massive in Arunachal Pradesh with the West Kameng region facing repeated flash floods and landslides. The severe landslides in the region have left it disconnected from the rest of the places.

As reported by the local media, the worst affected area on the state is the New Kaspi Nala near Nag Mandir with more than 800 people being stranded. As the bridge connecting these areas was washed away, the hundreds of people living in the region are left detached from other parts of the state.

As stated by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the West Kameng region went through a cloudburst on Sunday evening leading the rainfall to cross 100 mm in one hour.

There were weather forecasts by the Weather Channel Met team that had forecasted heavy to very heavy rain across northeastern India in the current week with warm and moist southerly winds blowing from the Bay of Bengal. Arunachal Pradesh was particularly forecasted to experience heavy rainfall by the IMD. However, it is also expected that the rainfall is to subside from Thursday onward.

The heavy rain has triggered heavy landslides and flash floods resulting in the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road being closed for traffic. The road closure has snapped the Army's 4th Corps headquarters at Tezpur in Assam’s connectivity with the Corps based in northern boundary with China. Commuters are asked by the Tawang Police to avoid this route for going to Bomdila and Tawang and rather use the OKSRT (Orang-Kalaktang-Shergaon-Rupa-Tenga) road as there are threats of landslides in the route.

Monday and Tuesday recorded over 90 mm rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh. However, what is noticeable is that despite the heavy rainfall, Arunachal Pradesh is still experiencing a deficit rainfall this monsoon.
