Incessant Rainfall in Meghalaya triggered flash floods and landslides in Several Districts

Shillong: Incessant rainfall in the past few days has caused major havoc in several districts of Meghalaya triggering flash floods and landslides in many places while water in streams and rivers reached the danger level including Umkhrah River in Shillong city.

As per reports, heavy downpour over the past few days has led to flash floods in the low-lying areas of the state capital Shillong and in the plain belts of Garo Hills.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had also indicated that there are chances of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the state between Wednesday and Saturday.

In the city, rainwater entered many localities in Polo and Forest Colony and submerged paddy fields in Mawlai near NEHU. Landslides had also damaged roads in many places including a road at Malki in Shillong. Sources also informed that landslides had cut off many roads including a road in Mawsynram, about 60km from Shillong.

Umkhrah River, one of the polluted rivers in the city, has reached the danger level on Tuesday evening.

Also, there reports claiming that the officials of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday said that an uprooted tree had blocked a road in the Malki, also there are instances of trees falling at Ryndangbriew viewpoint on the outskirts of the city and in Mawryngkneng, however, no casualties have been reported so far.

On the other hand, in an advisory, the Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO DDMA East Khasi Hills District has advised people to take care during rainfall as there are chances of flash floods, especially in areas near the rivers and streams.

On Wednesday, sources informed that due to the continuous downpour led to the collapse of retaining walls and trees in different parts of the state because of loose soil.

It may also be mentioned that landslide at Umsaw Nongkharai in a turning point on the lane towards Guwahati. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been informed and JCB is clearing up the road obstruction. No casualty reported with this incident.
