Indian-origin lady Ms. Indra Nooyi nominated as new World Bank president

Guwahati: Former CEO of global beverage giant PepsiCo, Indian origin Indra Nooyi is now being considered for the new World Bank president by the White House. A leading American journal published the news of the India-born lady’s latest achievement.

It was on August last year when Ms. Nooyi, 63, stepped down as PepsiCo’s chief with which she was for 12 years. As stated by The New York Times, she “has been courted as an administration ally by Ivanka Trump, the President’s eldest daughter who is playing a role in the selection of a nominee.”

However, although Ms. Nooyi has been nominated for the topmost position, but her decision on accepting and not accepting the post chosen by the Trump administration is not clear yet.

Several people familiar with the process said that the decision-making process for nominating World Bank topmost position is “fluid and in its initial stages and early front-runners and candidates often fall off the radar, or withdraw from consideration before the president [Donald Trump] makes his ultimate pick”.

The current World Bank president Jim Yong-kim, earlier this month, had announced that he would step down in February from his post. Notably, Jim has stepped down from the designated position nearly three years before the actual end of his term and the real reason for this early resignation is not known yet.

The process of choosing a successor to Mr. Kim is being overseen by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is the acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and Ms. Ivanka. Notably, Ms. Ivanka’s “role in the process drew some criticism from ethics watchdogs on Monday, which said it could pose a conflict of interest for the President’s daughter to be involved in international economic matters when she has not completely divested from her assets.”

It was in August 2017 when Ms. Indra Nooyi had joined Mr. Trump’s business council. But it was later disbanded as many chief executives quit after the President made a comment blaming the “many sides” for white supremacist violence in Charlottesville.

Before this, negative comments made by Ms. Nooyi after the 2016 election were considered as her probable roadblocks from being nominated for the post of World Bank president.
