India’s U-15 Girls squad leaves for Asian Wrestling Championship in Japan

New Delhi: A 10-member Indian team will be participating in the Under-15 Girls Asian Wrestling Championships 2019 for school girls, beginning at Fujimi, Japan from Thursday. The squad, accompanied by three coaches, a manager and a support staff, left for the Japanese city on Tuesday night.

The schoolgirls’ event, held under the aegis of the United World Wrestling for the first time, is open to all federations affiliated to the world body from Asia and the two-day event will be held in 10 Freestyle weight categories alone.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), in order to give exposure to these young aspiring wrestlers, has pitted a strong team, comprising Pooja Rani (33 kg), Komal (36), Pinki (39), Sweety (42), Antim (46), Priyanshi (50), Pratibha Janghu (54), Bhagyashree Fand (58), Sittu (62) and Sunita (66). All these wrestlers had made it to the squad on the basis of their performances in the nationals held at Chittorgarh.

Bhagyashree and teammates were upbeat before their departure saying they were ready for the challenges ahead. “We all have worked hard and prepared well. I am confident of winning a medal,” said the wrestler, who will be competing in 58 kg class.

When asked who their main opponents will be, all agree that they expected a tough challenge from the Japanese. “They are playing at home and they have a distinct advantage,” added Sweety.

Anil Kumar, Manisha Samal and Jitender Yadav (all coaches), Surender Kumar (manager) and Hansa Bharadwaj (physio) are accompanying the team.
