Indo-Bangladesh Joint Committee second meeting held in Sylhet on April 23 and 24

GUWAHATI: The second meeting of the Indo – Bangladesh Joint Committee on Border Haats was held in Sylhet (Bangladesh) on April 23 and 24. The Indian delegation was led by the Additional Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla and the Bangladesh delegation was led by Additional Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh, Ministry of Commerce, Md. Shafiqul Islam.

During the meeting the Joint Committee reviewed the operation of the 4 (four) existing Border Haats on the Indo-Bangladesh Border, reviewed the status of the construction of the 6 (six) new Border Haats, reviewed the Mode of Operation of the Border Haats, and discussed other relevant issues – besides finalizing the location of 6 (six) additional new Border Haats. Among the locations of the 6 (six) new Border Haats finalized jointly by the delegations of both India and Bangladesh during the meeting, 2 (two) are in the Assam stretch of the Indo-Bangladesh border at Latu in Karimganj district with Muria Village in Biyanibazar Upazila of Sylhet District on the Bangladesh side; and at Satrasal in Dhubri district with Char Bhurungamari Village in Bhurungamari Upazila of Kurigram District on the Bangladesh side.

The Joint Committee comprising of the Bangladesh and Indian delegations also visited the under-construction Border Haat at Bholaganj (Companiganj, Sylhet) – Bholaganj (East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya). The Joint Committee assessed the progress of construction of that Border Haat, and it was decided to expedite the construction, stated a press release.
