Inquiry instituted into disposal of medicines

Shillong, April 6: Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek today directed the authorities in the Shillong Civil Hospital to investigate the recent disposal of expired medicines by the hospital. Hek gave the Medical Superintendent of Shillong Civil Hospital, Dr A Borthakur two days time to conduct an immediate inquiry into the matter. A truck-load of expired medicines were allegedly disposed of by Shillong Civil Hospital authorities on Saturday.

The Health Minister further informed that a committee has been set up to look after various demands of medicines needed in various PHCs, CHCs, and based on the demands the medicines will be procured. The committee to be headed by Additiol Chief Secretary in charge Health is to see that the purchase of medicines in the State should be according to the demand. Earlier this year, there were allegations of disposal of expired medicines worth up to Rs 4 crore purchased under the funds of the tiol Health Rural Mission (NRHM).
