International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: Along with the rest of the world, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed by BTC Disabled Persons’ Association at Gendrabilw in Kokrajhar district on Monday. As part of the programme, the president of the BTC Disabled Persons’ Association, Rajib Lochan Ray hoisted the organization flag in the morning. A meeting was held with Ray in the chair.

Talking to reporters, Ray said the registration of at least 40 per cent disabled persons had been completed in the region. He said the association had been working for the welfare of the differently-abled in accordance with the department concerned. He said only 4 per cent government privileges to disabled persons had been given in the region which was not satisfactory. He also demanded that the government should increase the benefits to disabled persons. Ray said the government should provide one-time financial assistance for the physically challenged and increase the monthly stipend of Rs. 1,000 to them.

Joysagar: The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was also observed in Sivasagar on Monday. The day was observed by the Sivasagar District Biklanga Seva Samittee with assistance of the District Social Welfare Department in the Joysagar Seva Kendra on Monday. Sivasagar district secretary of the Biklanga Seva Samittee, H. Saikia hosted the function where the District Officer for Social Welfare took part as chief guest. The Social Welfare Officer in his speech said that the government had launched many welfare schemes for persons with disabilities.

Tezpur: North Assam Divyaang Association, Tezpur, in association with the Department of Psychiatric Social Work, LGBIMH, Tezpur, District Social Welfare office, Sonitpur, District Legal Service Authority, Sonitpur, Athmika Parivartan and Sacred Heart Disability Centre celebrated the 26th International Day of People with Disabilities with a day-long programme at the District Library auditorium. The programme began with the inauguration of a plantation drive by the secretary of North Assam Divyaang Association, Utpal Bhuyan. It was followed by unfurling of flag of the association at the District Library Campus by the president of the association, Mridul Kumar Borah and swahid tarpan by the vice-president of the association, Reyaz Ansari.

A cultural procession was also taken by throughout the town and the rally was flagged off by Ashok Kumar Borah, District and Session Judge, Sonitpur in the presence of Mridu Chanda Bordoloi, Secretary, DLSA among others. The panel discussion presided over by Munindra Nath, Principal of Tezpur Jatiya Vidyalaya, was attended by senior journalist Diganta Das as chief guest and guest of honour Shivam Ayengia, founder of SFNC and Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, Vinod Kumar Jain also spoke on the occasion.
