New Delhi: For the first time ever in the history of space research, India is to have its own space station. Though this sounds ambitious, this is going to be true at a certain point of time from now as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Sivan has announced the plan on Thursday.

K Sivan has also mentioned that this new project will be an extension of the Gaganyaan mission. Notably, as per the mission, an Indian crew will be sent to space through the Gaganyaan in 2022.

The ISRO chief says, "We have to sustain the Gaganyaan programme after the launch of (the) human space mission. In this context, we are planning to have a space station for India, our own space station."

Speaking about the Gaganyaan mission, Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space Jitendra Singh says that ISRO has resolved to send human on a space mission in 2022.

Singh says, "On the eve of 75th Independence anniversary of India in 2022 ISRO has resolved to send its first human Mission into space. An exclusive special cell — Gaganyaan National advisory council — has been created to monitor planning, preparation of the mission."

In the meanwhile, ISRO gets ready to launch the nation’s second mission to the moon which is named as Chandrayaan-2 for being an extension of Chandrayaan-1. The mission will be launched on July 15.

Speaking about the Chandrayaan-2 mission, Sivan said that the spacecraft will land on an uncharted territory of the moon that falls near the South Pole. The landing will be on September 6 or 7 and this is being termed as one most complex mission of the Indian space agency.

The Chandrayaan-2 will launch at 2.51 am boarding the GSLV MK-III vehicle from the spaceport of Sriharikota. The cost of the mission with regard to the satellite was Rs 603 crore and the cost of GSLV MK III is Rs 375 crore.
