JioPhone opens doors to affordable Online Entertainment in rural India

NEW DELHI, Dec 19: Launched by Reliance Jio, JioPhone which is available for a refundable deposit of just Rs 1500, appears to be a modest featurephone on the outside. But a closer scrutiny would reveal that it is more loaded than many high-end, sophisticated smartphones. It is the world’s one and only 4G LTE feature phone, and is technologically equipped to serve the many needs of the rural consumer, especially in the domain of online entertainment.

JioPhone comes preloaded with premium multimedia apps such as JioTV, JioCinema and JioMusic. These apps allow the user to watch popular movies and daily soaps using Jio’s 4G network. The JioTV app provides access to over 400 TV channels. Its Catch-up service allows user to access any soap episode aired in the past seven days. The JioMusic app has a library of millions of music tracks across various genres, moods, artists and languages. Using this app, a JioPhone user in Telanga can listen to his favourite Tollywood songs while a user in Rajasthan can enjoy folk music. These apps can even be accessed and operated through voice commands.

Reliance Jio had registered 6 million JioPhone bookings when it opened the booking window. A sizeable chunk of these orders came from rural markets. The phone has certainly struck a chord with the rural masses who are ever-willing to try out new-age digital tools that add value to their lives and provide wings to their digital aspirations. It has opened a new chapter in the digitisation of rural India. This was stated in a press release.
