Jitendra Singh expresses concern on non-communicable diseases

Shillong, April 23: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region and Chairman, NEC Dr. Jitendra Singh, expressed concern on Non Communicable Diseases at a young age. While iugurating a week-long NEC-Pink Chain Cancer Conclave 2016 at NEC, Shillong today, he spoke at length about prevalence of non communicable diseases including Cancer, Heart Diseases and Diabetes among people. While stressing on the need for improvement in quality of life, he observed that if detected at an early stage, most of the diseases are curable. He felt that a small group of young people should spread the awareness on prevention of various diseases especially Cancer in the North East through social media. He also strongly advocated for a specialized group of jourlists on Health Communication and awareness.
The Minister promised to set up a Medical College in Meghalaya in Public-Private- Partnership mode to cater to the needs of people from the North East for Medical Education. He further said that Dr. B. Barua Cancer Institute in Guwahati will be upgraded with more specialized disciplines like DM, M.Ch etc. The Minister informed that doctors from the North Eastern States will be trained on treatment of Cancer at Adyar Institute of Cancer at Cheni for which Union Government will bear all the expenses.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Meghalaya A.L Hek said that Government of Meghalaya has taken several measures to prevent Cancer and other diseases. He felt that Cancer can be curable and expressed concern over the growing rate of cancer in Mizoram.
Ram Muivah, Secretary, NEC welcomed the gathering and said about NEC’s commitment to take up health issues besides various developmental activities in the North East. C.K. Das, Member NEC offered vote of thanks. Several Oncologists from across the country including Dr. Vanda Raphel and Dr. G.K Rath are participating in this Conclave. The sessions are anchored by Media Persons like Vartika nda, Sweta Singh and many others. Dr. Abhishek Shankar, Cancer Specialist from AIIMS, New Delhi and Dr. Shailendra Choudhari, Director, Health from NEC are coorditing this conclave. This was stated in a press release.
