JNU row: Home Minister's effigy burnt

TINSUKIA/MARGHERITA, Feb 27: Activists of the Tinsukia District Committee of CPI (ML), AICCTU, All Assam Grameen Shramik Santha and All Assam Pragotoshil ri Santha on Thursday burnt the effigy of Union Home Minister Rajth Singh at Tha Chariali in Tinsukia and demanded his immediate resigtion.

They also demand the release of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar who was arrested by Delhi Police on sedition charges. The protesters claimed that Kahya Kumar is innocent and he was arrested on false charges.

Subhas Sen, secretary of CPI (ML) Tinsukia District committee said that the NDA Government at the Centre led by Prime Minister rendra Modi has started to curtail the rights of people after it come to power.

Sen said that the Jawaharlal Nehru University has been recognized in the country as well as intertiolly as a premier institution of higher education, a center of research, a laboratory of creative freedom where ideas could develop through debate and dissent.

The BJP Government wants to suppress the voice of dissent by appointing its men of choice i,e closer to RSS ideology in the academic institutes.

“We demand the government to lift the false and fabricated charges of sedition brought against JNU president Kanhaiya Kumar immediately and he be released unconditiolly,” he said.

A memorandum was also sent to the President of India through the Circle Officer, Tinsukia.
