JNU row: Meghalaya Youth Congress stages protest

FROM OUR REPORTER

SHILLONG, Feb 21: Expressing solidarity with the students of JNU, the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) held a demonstration in front of the Congress Bhawan, Tura on Saturday. The demonstration was led by MPYC president Richard Marak and Tura LYC president Allan Sylvester R Marak.

Tura LYC secretaries, and the elected MDC Stevie Marak, Donbosh N Sangma, general secretary, DCC West Garo Hills and the chairman of Tura Municipal Board were also present in the protest demonstration.

“India is witnessing a systematic effort by Modi Government to suppress the voice of students across the country, which goes against the basic tenet of our democracy, the freedom of expression,” the MPYC said in a statement.

The MPYC leaders stated that after FTII in Pune and Hyderabad Central University in Hyderabad, the BJP has now turned its gaze towards JNU, as a part of its attempt to break institutions of higher education in India and abuse the freedom enshrined in the Constitution.

They said that based on spurious evidence, fake tweets and doctored videos, charges of sedition were slapped against students of JNU. HRD Minister Smriti Irani, whose hands are still tainted with the death of Rohith Vemula, along with Home Minister Rajth Singh, has created an atmosphere of hate, violence and division on university campuses.

According to MYPY, the BJP has driven the economy to the ground and are now trying to distract people’s attention by indulging in theatrics on tiolism.

They however added that India is not going to be fooled. The policy of divide and rule British which was adopted by British will not work today.
