Jorhat girl wins gold at Intertiol Strength Lifting competition

JORHAT, Mar 13: Bagging gold in the 85 Kg category of the 3rd Intertiol Strength Lifting and Incline Benchpress Championships 2015 held at Mama, Bahrain from February 19 to 21, Jorhat College student and daughter of farmer Ghashyam Barua and Kabita Barua of Chungi Lahing Gaon under kachari of Jorhat district, Modhusmita Barua bought laurels not only to her college but also to the entire women folk of the country through her extraordiry achievement in the field of sports which is otherwise said to be domited by men.  

Modhusmita was grandly felicitated by the Jorhat College Students’ Union at a program organised in the college auditorium on Friday that was presided over by Dr Minoti Pathak, Associate Professor Dept. of Political Science, Principal Devabrata Sharma and the President of the Students’ Union.  Panchan Borthakur and Ranjit Hazarika from among the teachers;  Mukul Kandali, Librarian Jorhat College,  Asim Bora from the Jorhat College Office and Mouchumi Mahanta from the Women’s cell felicitated Modhusmita Barua on the occasion.  

Modhusmita Barua made a power point presentation describing her journey from a remote village through many trials to the gold. Talking to The Sentinel, Modhusmita Barua said,“ I feel proud that through the gold medal I could bring me and fame to the college. Being an Assamese girl, I feel proud that I could save the me of the Assamese society. I would ever remain thankful to the people of kachari especially the common man like the Rickshaw and the cart puller who helped me fincially to take on the journey. Though I applied for fincial help but I never received a single penny till date. Even the State Sports Minister Ajit Singh and the Union Sports Minister Sarbanda Sonowal had congratulated me so far. I got the maximum support from my college, Mariani MLA Rup Jyoti Kurmi who gave me ten thousand rupees and people from kachari, sports association and through a page in Facebook helped raised the money for my tour. In the future I have an aim for the Olympics”.

Mostly influenced by the Bollywood movie Mary Kom, Modhusmita took to strength lifting only after joining Jorhat College as a student of BA and in the last concluded championship at Mama capital of the island country Bahrain participated by nine countries, Modhusmita lifted a total of 312.5 kg to bag gold.
