Jorhat Medical College and Hospital To Start DM, MCH Courses: Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma

JORHAT: “The year 2018-19 is a red letter year for Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) which has reached the stage to start DM, MCH courses within the next three years. JMCH has reached the equivalent stage of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) as no patients will be referred from JMCH,” said State Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during the inaugural ceremony of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the JMCH premises on Saturday.

“For JMCH the year 2018-19 is a big turning point as four major systems started. First, at the cost of Rs 9 crore, the Department of Neurosurgery was started. Second, in the same year the Medical Council of India granted permission to start six technical PG courses, like Gynaecology, Surgery, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology and Radiology while JMCH was selected to be the MCI Evaluation Centre for faculty members of medical colleges of the north-eastern region. Fourth milestone is the inauguration of the Cardiac Cath Lab which has been assembled by a US firm at the cost of Rs 5 crore. Along with all this, now JMCH is in the stage to start Doctorate of Medicine and Master of Surgery academic courses,” added the minister.

He congratulated all the professors, assistant professors, staff and employees of JMCH who played a decisive role in treating the large number of hooch tragedy patients and in controlling the death rate.

Hitendra Nath Goswami, Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, asked doctors not just to treat patients but also to start research in kidney ailments and cancer.

Others who spoke on the occasion were Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, State Power Minister Tapan Kumar Gogoi, Dr. Anup Barman, Director of Medical Education, Assam, Dr. Atul Chandra Boro, Principal of JMCH, Samir Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary, Department of Health, Government of Assam, and Dr. Saurav Borkotoky.
