Junior engineer abducted

SHILLONG, May 4: Suspected Garo tiol Liberation Army (GNLA) abducted a Junior Engineer attached with the Block Area Development Office, Sout Garo Hills on Monday morning. The Junior Engineer identified as Alladin Sangma was travelling with his wife on a private car when they were waylaid by two armed men at Jabuk forest area; around 10 kms from Bagmara, the district headquarters of South Garo Hills.  A senior Police officer confirmed the incident of abduction although the police came to know about the incident from other reliable sources. The wife of the abducted government official was released untouched and the police have sought her co-operation in its efforts to rescue the official.

The abduction came in the wake of the series of extortion served by the GNLA to government officials and businessmen in South Garo Hills since January this year.  The Sentinel had earlier reported about the extortion notices served by the GNLA that has even reached to a level of officials serving as magistrates.

There were reports that there were government officials who have not been attending offices for the past couple of months due to fear of the GNLA reprisal.
