K to take up rhino cause, check poaching

 FROM A CORRESPONDENT

Diphu,  April 18: Kuki tiol Assembly (K), the apex social body of the Kuki community of Karbi Anglong based at Manja, 16 kilometers from Diphu held a general meeting on Wednesday last at its office premises, to decide number of issues pertaining to development of the kuki domited areas of Karbi Anglong autonomous district and increasing occurrence of rhino poaching in Kaziranga tiol Park (K).

Kuki tiol Assembly while expressing dismay over poaching of wild animals in various reserve forests and sanctuaries of Assam particularly the one-horned rhino the K decided to take various measures to check poaching through close coordition with " Save Wild Life for Economic Growth", an NGO formed few years back mostly by the members of K. In the same meeting it was decided that if any Kuki villager is found to be involved in poaching of wild life he will be out cast from the village if the village is located within Kuki inhabited area of Karbi Anglong.

To boost responsiveness regarding inevitability of protecting forest and wild life this NGO will undertake intensive poster campaigning.

"We badly need some logistics like vehicles and fincial support to prevent rhino poaching inside Kaziranga because a sizable number of poachers based at Churachandpur district of Manipur operates in the core areas of the sanctuary with the help of the allegedly illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who help them to set up hideouts for concealing arms and weapons and to process the poached horn of the rhino; women belonging to the Bangladeshi immigrant society conceal rhino horns inside their cover all dress and use veil to smuggle out rhino horn from Assam screening their identity. The operatives vend rhino horn mainly to Chi and Arab tions; with little support from the authority we can wipe out their network" Tongthang Touthang President of K told this reporter after the meeting.

It may be mentioned that "Save Wild Life for Economic Growth" NGO with active help of K has remained instrumental in preventing rhino poaching inside Kaziranga tiol park since 2012. A large number of poachers were arrested and huge quantity of arms and ammunition was seized by SIT of Karbi Anglong police including a Myanmar tiol with the help of this NGO.
