Kalaigaon AASU demands immediate repair of Mekenzi road

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

KALAIGAON, July 13: Kalaigaon unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a sit-in in front of Kalaigaon bus stand on Thursday to demand immediate repair of the dilapidated Mekenzi road.

Addressing the protest meeting, AASU leaders like Ranjan Sarma and Gaurikant th said that this road was at a 17-km distance from Kalaigaon to Bengbari. The area of Kalaigaon includes more than 80 villages. The road has not been repaired since 12 long years. In 2004, the World Bank had repaired the road but this was broken by a big flood in the same year. After that, even a single piece of stone has not been laid on this road.

The farmers of this area supply various vegetables all over the State. But the poor road condition makes it difficult for farmers to send their products to the markets. Therefore, the students’ body had been demanding repair of the road. But MP Ramen Deka, MLA Maheswar Boro and EM Jagadish Sarkar allegedly did not take proper initiative to repair this road. The AASU urged the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri through the Circle Officer of Kalaigaon to take up the issue.
