Soon after this announcement, supporters of Kalaignar gathered in large numbers around the Kauvery Hospital. The situation remained grim in Chennai as they prayed for his recovery. Security has been beefed up across Chennai.

Kalaignar was admitted to the hospital on July 28 after he contracted urinary tract infection and developed a high fever.

DMK party workers who share a close attachment with Karunanidhi have become inconsolable. Many party workers fainted after the news broke and had to be given medical attention.

Chennai Police has closed all roads leading to Kalignar's Gopalapuram residence fearing any untoward incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences at the death of one of the most senior politicians of India.

DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Chennai past midnight on July 28. The 94 years old Karunanidhi was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Kauvery Hospital after he dropped out his blood pressure level.

The death of Kalaignar, two years after Selvi Jayalalitha's death is expected to create a major vacuum in Tamil Nadu politics.
