Kargil Vijay Diwas: Nation pays homage to its bravehearts

Every year, on July 26 Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated in the honor on Kargil War heroes, who got the victory in the year 1999 Kargil War with Pakistan. The Indian Army declared the mission successful on July 26, 1999; since then the day has been celebrated annually as Vijay Diwas.

Kargil Vijay Diwas was named after the success of the "Operation Vijay". The Kargil War, which took place in the mountains of Jammu & Kashmir after Pakistani troops crossed the Line of Control and occupied Indian post on the heights. For the Indian forces, it took about three months to recapture the post.

On Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while paying his tributes to the Kargil war heroes, tweeted, "On #KargilVijayDiwas, a grateful nation pays homage to all those who served the nation during operation Vijay. Our brave soldiers ensured that India remains protected and gave a befitting answer to those who tried to vitiate the atmosphere of peace.”

In another tweet, the Prime Minister, wrote, "India will always remember with pride, the outstanding political leadership provided by Atal ji during operation Vijay, he led from the front, supported our armed forces and clearly articulated India's stand at the world stage. Other ministers also paid tribute to the armed forces on Kargil Vijay Diwas that include Sushma Swaraj, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Along with them some well-known people also paid a tribute to the war heroes. Some of them are: Chief of the Army staff General Bipin Rawat, Former Cricketer Virendra Sehwag, while International sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a sand sculpture on the Kargil Vijay Diwas at Puri beach in Odisha. During the Kargil war, 527 soldiers from the Indian Armed Forces sacrificed their lives, while that on the Pakistani side is believed to be between 357 to 453. Under operation, Vijay India Government mobilized 2 lakh troops. Kargil War Memorial, built by the Indian Army, is located in Dras, in the foothills of the Tololing Hill. The memorial is located about 5 km from the city.
