Silchar, June 18: Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has earned the accolades of people of Barak Valley by setting an exemplary humanitarian gesture by standing by the side of two distressed families in their hour of need. The young member of Assam Legislative Assembly from North Karimganj rushed to the help of the marooned families caught in the swirling flood waters in their homes in close proximity to each other in Sarifnagar, Kanaishale village of Karimganj district. Wading through the flooded waters, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha extended all help to both the families of the deceased and even lent his shoulder to carry one of the dead bodies to carry them to the safe National Highway 6.

The local crematorium and burial ground being under water, the MLA initiated the last rites of Nishi Namasudra and Kulendra Namasudra who had met their natural death. It was most commendable to see the MLA wade through knee deep water and did the last rites of both the deceased with the help of their family members and his own people. Rising above all considerations, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha with high spirit and human thoughts in mind virtually fought the surging flood waters. The MLA came in for high praise even from his political adversaries.

It is true in every arena of life, there are persons with exceptions. In politics too, there are high standards of morality and humanity. Often, politicians are accused of self-aggrandizement, self-glorification and gratification. Before that the young MLA from Mariani, Rupjyoti Kurmi set the same example when a poor daily wage earner died in a village of his constituency. He missed no time to stand by the family of the labourer. It was in the early part of this month. Both the MLAs have shown that the sole purpose of life is to serve humanity.
