KHADC Chief may resign as an MLA

SHILLONG, Sept 24: KHADC Chief PN Syiem who is also a Congress MLA from Mawsynram has indicated that he might resign as an MLA after the Cabinet passed the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) Amendment Bill, 2015 in the ongoing Autumn Assembly Session today in order to prevent holding of dual posts.

“I will take more priority on the unity and the future of our people then to think about my persol interest and I will take my decision to resign as an MLA or MDC base on this,” KHADC Chief P.N. Syiem told media persons here on Thursday.

“The assemble has today passed a resolution to omit entry 9 of the Prevention of Disqualification Act 1972 and in view of this I have to be in a conservation stage and I need to consult this matter my family, fellow MDCs, supporters and I have to listen to my own conscience then only I will take a decision,” he added.

According to him, the Amendment bill passed in the Assembly Session should be brought forward only after the current term is over in March 2019.

“I don’t know what the intention of the State government to cut short the tenure of the representative of the people,” he said.

He however said that the intention to bring the bill in order to curb the holding of duel post is a good move by the government. When asked if he will move court, Syiem said “It’s very tural that if injustice prevails we have to seek justice”.
