SHILLONG, May 8:  Member of District Council (MDC) of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Grace Mary Kharpuri has alleged that KHADC CEM PN Syiem had threatened her via a phone message asking her to resign as an Executive Member (EM) in-charge of Forest failing which he will take matters into his own hands by dropping her as an EM.

Kharpuri in a press conference held in the city on Tuesday also displayed the message allegedly sent by PN Syiem to her on May 4, to media persons which reads, ‘Just tell me you will resign or shall I drop.’

It may be mentioned that KHADC CEM PN Syiem is also the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) party which is a relatively new political party which was floated just before the recently concluded Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections.

Concerning the alleged diversion of the Rs 28 crore funded by the Central Government towards the Council assets, the MDC from Nongshken constituency has demanded for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) inquire into the matter.

“The CEM has threatened three times via phone message that I should resign from my position as an EM and this message has greatly affected the sentiments of my supporters especially as I am the president of the central women’s wing of the party and the president of the zonal committee of the party.”

When asked, she said, “Being a woman and receiving such threats, I feel that yes the KHADC CEM PN Syiem should apologize for sending such messages.”

The MDC further said that she fully supports the signature campaign launched by Mawhati MDC James Sylliang demanding the convening of a special session to discuss the alleged diversion of Rs 28 crores fund by the Centre to the Council assets by the KHADC CEM without discussing it first.

“This is a special scheme from the Central Government and the allocation of work to various contractors concerning the Rs 28 crore has been done solely by the CEM without any consultation with other MDCs,” she alleged.

She further said that the PDF party was formed by 11 MDCs and the KHADC CEM PN Syeim who is also the Chairman of the party joined at a later stage before the MLA elections.

Kharpuri urged the party leaders to take up the issue of Rs 28 crore seriously.
