KHADC to issue notification soon: Syiem

SHILLONG, Feb 15: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) CEM PN Syiem in view of the recent Supreme Court ruling on traditiol heads and headmen said that notifications will be issued to all the Sordar, raids, Syiem and headman that they can now exercise their duties as per the Supreme Court order until the fil verdict arrives.

It may be noted here that the Supreme Court had on February 12, ruled that the traditiol heads and headmen of Meghalaya can carry on with the exercise of their powers as conferred upon them under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

“We will send notification issue to all the concern parties specifying that headmen can now exercise their duties as per the Supreme Court order,” Syiem told newsmen here on Monday.

He said the traditiol institutions of the State have the backing of the Indian Constitution under the Sixth Schedule where the headmen can function as per the rules and regulations laid by the District Council as the law under the Sixth Schedule.

According to him, different departments and institutions within the jurisdiction of the District Council should respond positively to any orders issued by the headmen as per the rules and regulations laid as per the District Council as per the Sixth Schedule should accept the certificates of the headmen.

The KHADC Chief has also expressed gratitude to the MDCs involved in filing the Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court.
