Khasi poet Soso Tham remembered

SHILLONG, Dec 18: Khasi Student' Union (KSU) Mawlai circle on Monday commemorated the 77th death anniversary of renowned Khasi poet Soso Tham by organizing a debate competition for the youth of Mawlai.
Participated by many youth from Mawlai, the debate competition was won by Evanisha Pathaw from Mawlai Kyntonmassar, who took away a cash prize of Rs 5,000. While Bajai Warjri from Mawkynroh Umshing came in second, Lamboklang Khongwir from Mawlai Nongkwar finished third.
The debate competition was chaired by KSU Mawlai circle general secretary Rapborlang Nongrum. 
Speaking on the occasion, former KSU leader and North East Student Organization chairman Samuel B Jyrwa said the poems written by Soso Tham still have an impact and relevance in today's present day and age.
Meanwhile, the Seng Kyrsiew Thiah, Sohra also commemorated the death anniversary of U Soso Tham and also remembered the contribution of the former Syiem of Hima Sohra, Duwam Sing Syiem.
A panel discussion was also held on the topic "Why we have to respect Syiem Duwan Sing".
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Syiem of Hima Sohra, Paiem Freeman Sing Syiem said, "Syiem Duwan Sing has been tagged as 'Syiem tap thlong', however I feel that this is all politics of different Himas."
He said that some Himas are making such allegations against Hima Sohra just to tarnish the image of Syiem Duwan Sing.
The Syiem of Hima Sohra further said that there is a need to remove the tag of "Syiem tap thlong" from Syiem Duwan Sing.
Freeman Sing Syiem also said he is willing to work together with Seng Kyrsiew Thiah (a local organization) to find ways and means to remove the tag against Syiem Duwan Sing.
