KHM collects drinking water sample

A REPORTER

SHILLONG, Feb 1: The Khun Hynniewtrep tiol Awakening Movement (KHM) Youth Wing today collected water sample from the Shillong Municipal Board and Public Health Engineering (PHE) department water reservoir located at Iewduh market to determine if the water being supplied in the city if fit for consumption.

It may be reminded that earlier KHM had collected samples of the clear water storage of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) located at 4½ Mile, Upper Shillong and later the sample was sent to the Pasteur Institute and Medical Research Institute for testing in which the report indicated that the GSWSS in Upper Shillong had a pH value of 5.7, which is below the prescribed limit.

The KHM Youth Wing had also sought the intervention of Meghalaya Health Minister A. L Hek requesting him to conduct a monthly check on potable water, parallel with the public health engineering (PHE) department’s test. Speaking to the media, KHM youth wing president Thomas Passah said, “The main reason for us to collect these samples is to check and know for sure that the water being supplied to the people in the city is safe since earlier when we had conducted a similar test at GSWSS located at 4½ Mile the report showed that the water had high pH value which was below the prescribed limit.”

He said the PHE department had claimed that the water reservoir at Iewduh was a restricted area, however on reaching the site there were no security personnel stationed at the area.

He informed that the sample collected from the reservoir will be sent to the government run Pasteur Institute for testing and they are expecting to get the report within a week.
