KKH open university to host documentary film festival at Jorhat central jail

JORHAT, Feb 22: A two-day documentary festival is scheduled to be held at Jorhat central jail premises from Thursday.  The Brojen Baruah Memorial Documentary Festival has been organized by Krish Kanta Handique State Open University. The university is planning to organize this festival at 13 jails in the state. This is the first such efforts of its kind in the country.  

 Addressing mediapersons here today, university vice chancellor Dr. Hitesh Deka said, “The University organized the film festival with two-day long programme at each jail premises. In Jorhat central jail the festival will be held on February 23 and 24, iIn Golaghat central jail the festival will be held on February 24 and 25 and in Dibrugarh central jail the festival is scheduled to be held on February 25 and 26 respectively. Six films of Assamese, Marathi and Hindi will be screened at the festival.”

Intertiolly acclaimed filmmaker Jahnu Baruah who was present at the press conference said, “It is first of its kind in the country to organize a film festival in jails by a university. We are hopeful that the effort of the Open University will help the prisoners in the jails to know about the society in a different way. It will also help the prisoners to start a new life after the period of imprisonment will over.”

 “The prisoners are also a part of the society. They should not think that their lives have completely destroyed when they come to the jail. There are many scopes to resume their normal life after completion of jail term. We want the prisoners should get a chance to rectify themselves in the rest part of their lives and to resume a new life,” he added.
