BARPETA, Feb 17: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti’s Barpeta district committee on Monday organized a demonstration here demanding adequate compensation for those affected by installation of towers of Power Grid Corporation. They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta district demanding an early solution to their demands.

The memorandum alleged that the Power Grid Corporation has refused to pay any compensation to the affected people due to installation of tower and the way of laying the cables. But the Union Power Ministry has directed the corporation on October 15 last year that the compensation of minimum 85 per cent of the value of land should be paid where the tower is installed and minimum 15 per cent of land value should be paid to those on the right-of-way. It also clearly stated that the valuation of the land in rural areas should be double of the present price plus equal amount of contribution.

It also alleged that the Corporation has not paid the value of other property such as the house and trees affected. It has deducted 30 per cent from the value determined by the Forest Department in case of trees.

The organization demanded immediate payment of proper value to the people. At the same time they also demanded fresh survey of all the properties already affected in the process. It also demanded that all the land required for such purpose should be acquisitioned only after consent through public hearing.
